The Legend Of Kanaloa-Huluhulu
There was a strange rumor that came down the cold mountains that a bird catcher had died from the attack of a giant and later the king's constable checked out the body. The victim's body was bruised in many places and long bones had been broken but what was most evident, was that his shoulder was dislocated. The giant must have known the sacred art of lua or the special method of fighting of which was so lethal that its aim was to dislocate all the victim's joints and break all of their bones.
Kaua-hoa was in charge of keeping the Koke'e trail safe and thought that maybe the giant was troubled. He had to stop that from happening so he himself journeyed through the Koke'e Trail and heard something behind a lehua tree. It was the giant.
Kaua-hoa asked him,"What is your name?"
Then the giant answered,"Kanaloa."
Kaua-hoa said,"Then I will call you Kanaloa-Huluhulu for the hairy one."
Kanaloa-Huluhulu couldn't stand the insults and began to fight Kaua-hoa. Since he was so big his strong blows were really slow and was easy to avoid. Kaua-hoa quickly dashed to the side of Kanaloa-Huluhulu and twisted his finger which broke.
The giant was thrown off-balance and stepped over all sorts of trees and bushes because of the pain. Kaua-hoa tripped him with his long piece of rope, quickly chopped off his head, then threw it off the cliff never to be found because if Kanaloa found his head, he would become alive again.
Since Kanaloa-Huluhulu had stepped over all the trees and bushes, it was cleared out of the way and the strange part about that was nothing grew back in the area that is now the Koke'e Pavilion because people say Kanaloa-Huluhulu, the giant is forever still wandering around trying to find his head.
