The great peace, round eyes
The Hawaiian god of the sea in some myths. The Hawaiian creator, the equivalent
of Tangaroa from Maori mythology, in other myths. In the former myths he was the
companion of Kane, the god of creation. They would use their clubs to strike the
ground and cause springs of fresh water to burst forth. Kanaloa was pictured
with round eyes, unlike pictures of the other gods. A root translation of the
word, ka-na-loa, means "the great peace". In the latter myths he is
also the god of the underworld (whose land was caught by Maui's hook and brought
up in islands), who can teach magic. In these he appears in the shape of an
octopus. Kanaloa was responsible for the southern Pacific Ocean and as such was
god of seamen and lord of fishermen. Kanaloa is sometimes known as the father of
Maui
